It was pretty exciting this last week to have my quilt top come home completed from the Row by Row robin. As you can see it turned out beautifully! All of the leaves are pieced in batiks. I think I may add another row in length and width to make it large enough for this bed which is a king size. I am very happy with how it turned out. Many thanks to all the ladies who were involved in this Row Robin with me! This is the last of the quilt tops I got to work on in the Row Robin. This one is a patriotic modified four patch and belongs to Cathy. It was fun to work on and a bit of a relief after some of the more challenging blocks that have been in this row robin. I think it turned out really nicely though! It is in the mail on its way home to Cathy now. The block lottery for February was an hourglass block - these above are the ones I did for the draw. The lucky winner of this lottery will be receiving 41 blocks in the mail - that should b e enough to make a great quilt! Lots of fun and...

I have just finished my work on Teresa's Row Robin and sent it on it's way to Cathy. Cathy will be the last one to add to this quilt top and then it will be on it's way home to Teresa. I bet she is excited! My maple leaf quilt top is on it's way home to me as we speak and I am very excited to see it in person! Teresa's quilt was based on Underground Railroad blocks and when I looked over the patterns provided I decided on the Shoo-fly block. Nice easy block I thought! Once I started cutting the fabric I realized that each 12" block was actually four 6" blocks - a little more complicated than I had bargained on! I wonder, is this really the easiest way to force myself to learn to quilt? I enjoyed making the blocks though and was quite pleased with how they turned out. Teresa was kind enough to send me a picture of how my Row by Row Robin quilt top is coming along. Isn't it looking great? So far there are the rows done my Cathy, Teresa and myself. All the maple leaves are done in batiks and I know I will love it even more when it is done its travels and gets back home here. My tentative plan is to do this quilt up for my husband's parents - they live in Quebec with all the beautiful fall colours so it seems very appropriate. I wish I could see it in person right now but I will have to be patient awhile longer.

I'm taking part in a Row X Row Robin on the Mailblocks quilting group - trying to get a little experience with "sane" quilting and building up my confidence with it. This is the first Row to come my way to be worked on. Bridgett chose the Spiderweb block for her quilt, providing the sheets for paper piecing it as well as the main blue colour fabric. Above you can see a sample of one of the 12" blocks I made for my row. Here is the quilt top with my row added to the original one by Bridgett. These blocks were a hoot to do! I loved using all the bits and pieces of scraps of various quilting cottons I have around. It is a true scrap quilt - completely random - and I loved working on it. I think I will have to make one of these myself one of these days!

In my continuing desire to learn "sane" quilting, I have joined a Row by Row Round Robin on the Mailblocks Yahoo group. Everyone in the round robin does up a row of 5 - 12" quilt blocks in the colours and patterns of their choice and as they make the rounds each person adds another row. At the end of the round robin everyone will get back a fully pieced quilt top and only need to finish it off. Sounded like a plan to me! So this is my row which I have sent off to make the rounds. I included a cream batik in the package because I wanted all the background to be the same. I chose a 12" Maple Leaf pattern from the QuiltersCache site and requested the maple leafs to be done in batiks of colours which would occur in nature. Given the huge array of fall colours, as well as the greens, it shouldn't be too difficult to have each maple leaf different, or at least to have any duplicates well spread out over the quilt.
