Embroidery on Photos

My first great-grandson, Vito, is my inspiration for trying touches of embroidery on photographs. II attended a class at the Vulcan Art Society where the instructor showed us techniques, tips, etc. and it was a lot of fun. This beautiful photo of Vito seemed the perfect way to try it out and I did several on both black and white and colour to gift to the proud parents, grandmother - my daughter-in-law - and the other great-grandmom

The basic technique is to first print out the photo and decide on a design. You place the photo on a piece of styrofoam or cardboard and use a needle to punch small holes where your needle needs to pierce the fabric to execute the stitches. You can do this as you go along which allows you to adjust your desired design as you work. Then simply embroider away using the stab method and watching your tension so you don't damage the photo. Chain stitch, stem stitch, french knots and spider web roses work very well.

This is a quick and easy project with very satisfying results. Lots of fun!

This is an antique sewing box - I could not resist it when I saw it for sale! Were you able to guess the item from the sneak peek earlier in the week? The box itself is fairly small, 8 inchs X 6 inchs and 4 inches high (20 cm X 15 cm and 10 cm high). From my research it is of Asian origin. Inside the sewing box is lined with hand-painted silk. The inside of the lid features a neat little needlebook. In the bottom of the sewing box there are more beautiful hand-painted blossoms and an attached pincushion. Giveaway!

I am feeling like celebrating for various reasons! Firstly, this is my 100th post on my blog and that seems worthy of a little celebration. Secondly, I can now count the days on this year's camping season on my fingers! Well, gotta love those nice round numbers like 400! It is always a good excuse to celebrate by having a little giveaway.
